CREATING A WORLD COMMUNITY

A world that works for everyone

Let's play a game. The name of the game is World Community Communications. It is a simple game. It is not necessarily an easy game to play, however. There are no losers in this game. On the other hand, if the game is played well, everyone is a winner. Like all games, the game has rules.* They are as follows:

Rules Of The Game

1. COMMUNICATE IN A MANNER THAT SERVES THE OTHER PERSON-The first rule: Always have your intention on serving the other person. That way they have an experience of having been served, understood and respected, if not honored.

2. BE STRAIGHT-- communications should consist of straight talk; meaning being direct and factual. That does not mean people should not express their opinions and views. However, in doing so they should make it clear that is what they are doing.

3. COMMUNICATE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE-Communicate openly on matters that will potentially advance a situation or support another person. Expressing acknowledgment and appreciation and offering assistance to others are examples. Say what there is to say. Do not withhold communications.

4. COMMUNICATE FROM YOUR PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE- When communicating speak from your personal knowledge and experience. Relying on another person's knowledge and experience invariably is interpreted inaccurately and incompletely.

5. DO NOT GOSSIP-"Idle talk or rumor, especially about the private affairs of others" limits organizational effectiveness.

6. COMMUNICATE ON A NEED TO KNOW BASIS-in business, particularly, communicate information on a need to know basis.

7. GRANT OTHERS YOUR LISTENING-Listening is essential to effective communications and is, perhaps, the most difficult aspect of it. Listen to what others have to say.

8. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR COMMUNICATIONS AND HOW YOU RECEIVE COMMUNICATIONS-Each person involved in verbal and written communications is responsible for what they communicate as well as their own "listening" and understanding of what is being communicated. Rarely do we really hear what the other person is saying or intending to say.

*These rules are not the right rules; they are, however, the rules of this Game.
