A world that works for everyone

I learned of Friendship Day, today. I do not recall ever hearing about it until I saw people twittering about this afternoon. It is the most frequent trending topic as I write this post.

My quick research informs me that Friendship Day may in fact be International Friendship Day which takes place the first Sunday of August every year. I understand the United States Congress proclaimed it in 1935. My best source of information at this time is Wikipedia. If you have more a authoritative resource, I would appreciate you commenting and providing the information.

The thousands of Happy Friendship Day tweets being tweet today raised the question in my mind; what is a friend? Webster defines a friend as "one attached to another by affection or esteem." Is that it?

In our everyday use of the term, I would extend the meaning to hold paramount someone who has been trustworthy in their association with me over time. My friends have demonstrated they are people I have been able to depend upon for for advise, assistance and support, many times physical, spiritual and emotionally in nature. They are people who tell me their genuine beliefs and thoughts about matters and rarely hold back expressing them when they think they might be helpful to me. They are also people who are willing to listen and accept what I have to say relative to my beliefs and thoughts although they may disagree.

I sincerely appreciate all my friends. There are many; although they may not know who they are.

Happy Friendship Day to all my friends, yours, theirs and theirs.
